We left Las Vegas about 10:00 am with the
intentions of arriving in the afternoon with Los Angeles a mere four hours away. The road
between Las Vegas and Los Angeles is an eerie one. If you haven't heard the stories, they
say there is a dead body for every quarter mile out there in the desert. Whether that's
true or not nobody knows. But it is fact that the mafia once ruled Vegas, and they had a
simple and effective way of dealing with their problems. By taking a drive out to the
desert.
Once we entered California, a weird thing happened.. it was like all of a sudden, you were in the coolest place on the planet. Everything was okay, nothing was bothering us, all of our worries and stresses had vanished. Very Cool. We arrived in three and a half hours so I guess the speedometer was broke. ;-)
Once we came into the populated areas,
there was a feeling of being insignificant. I mean, with an estimated 29 million people in
California alone... what were a few tourists from Canada going to matter? We did have a
scare though. We turned off on the wrong off ramp and found ourselves in East L.A. ,
looking for a gas station. It sounds worse than it was, I think all the gang type movies
had brainwashed us.. we expected to see gangs.. instead, we saw guys selling oranges to
people as they drive by. The gas attendant didn't speak English very well, and he ended up
keeping Mark's Visa card. Of course he claims he didn't mean to... but he didn't offer it
back to Mark either. We phoned him after we got to our hotel and straightened the whole
thing out. We went and got the card back, all was fine. No extra charges, no nothing other
than an embarrassed gas clerk and scared couple of tourists.
La Reve Hotel in West Hollywood is where
we stayed. This is the same hotel that not too long ago, Joe Tyler from the rock group
"Def Leppard" was arrested for spousal abuse. We weren't there at the same time
mind you... but it could have been in the same room we stayed in! Who knows? After all...
this is Los Angeles.. the city that let O.J. walk.
We called Jon Roberts, Pamela and Tommy's personal assistant when we got into town like the Lee's had asked us to do. We were going to hook up and talk for a bit, "crank up the new shit" as Tommy put it. (referring to Motley Crue's soon to be released ninth album "Personality #9") We waited and waited but nobody called. We decided to head out on the town and do some sight seeing. It's not every day one has this opportunity.
We went and had a late lunch at Planet Hollywood in Beverly Hills, which was surprisingly affordable. After that we headed back to the hotel to see if the Lee's had called yet.
There were no calls waiting so we
decided to go for a swim in the upstairs pool. This place was GREAT! It had everything.. a
Jacuzzi (hot tub), a decent sized swimming pool, patio furniture to lounge around in and
best of all, a phone so you could forward your calls so you wouldn't miss anything. We
were positive they were going to call.
"Any minute" I can still hear myself saying, but the only call we did get was from one of our friends at Baywatch, Joe Molina. Joe is the executive assistant to Michael Berk, one of Baywatch's founders. Joe invited us out for dinner at a sidewalk bistro a few blocks from where we were staying so rather than sit around and wait for a call that may not come in... we went. One thing about California... GREAT FOOD! It seems most people are so much into their image in California. that they only eat healthy. (or so it seemed)
After dinner, Joe had arranged for us to
see a taping of "Later with Greg Kineer". This took place at the NBC studios in
Burbank, on the Warner Bros. lot. By the way, we were right next door to "The Tonight
Show with Jay Leno". No, we didn't meet Leno, oh well.. life was rough as it was. We
were given V.I.P. treatment at the show (Later with Greg Kineer).. led in before everybody
else even though we were at the back of the line. (we were the ones with the V.I.P.
passes)
Greg thought it would be fun to pull a prank on us so without us knowing... he taped us as we were being seated. Then, as part of his stand-up before the guests come out, he explained how at NBC they were testing new sound equipment.. the sensomike 2000 he called it. He then showed tape of us when we were coming in, with other people's voices dubbed overtop ours.
I must admit.. it was funny. The writers of that show made it look like we thought we were at a taping of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air! (a NBC show staring Will Smith) They made us sign release forms after the show so we wouldn't sue them. I guess I can strike that possibility out now! (just kidding)
